DAY 1: Nelson → Mapua Flat riding · Bike ferry · Easy

Shuttle from Nelson to Stoke for bike fitting and briefing, then a flat, relaxed ride through estuary scenery. Hop a dedicated bike ferry from Rabbit Island to the charming coastal village of Mapua — cafes, craft beer, and hot-smoked fish and chips straight from the paper await.

Optional add-on: Extra night in Mapua to explore the Moutere — cellar doors, a vineyard lunch, and NZ's oldest pub.

DAY 2 — Mapua → Motueka Rolling hills · Max 100m elevation · Moderate

Coast along to Ruby Bay, climb gently through apple orchards above the sea, and pass through Tasman before a rolling ridge trail brings you to Motueka. Stop for food and a craft beer under the oak trees at Toad Hall Cafe & Townshend Brewery, then follow the estuary waterfront into town.

DAY 3 — Motueka → Kaiteriteri Fruit country & MTB park · Easy–Moderate

Guided finale through orchard country with trailside fruit stalls, then into the Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park for the Easy Rider Trail — smooth and not technical, just some tight bends winding through bush and pines. The trail opens to reveal your destination: the golden sands of Kaiteriteri Beach.

DAY 4 — Into Abel Tasman National Park Walk · Kayak · Or cruise — your choice

Trade the bike for boots or a paddle. Travel to the Wilson family beachfront lodges at Torrent Bay and Awaroa. Walk golden-sand beaches through lush native bush, kayak the best sections, or cruise between lodges — your guides help you plan each day to suit your pace. All meals, transfers, and accommodation in the park are included.

DAY 5 — Abel Tasman → Nelson Final day in the park · Transfer home

One last morning to walk, kayak, or cruise back to Kaiteriteri at your own pace, then an included transfer returns you to Nelson to wrap up a memorable five days.

DAY 1 — Nelson → Mapua Flat coastal riding ~30 km · Boat cruise · Easy

Your luggage is transferred to your accommodation while you head to base for bike fitting and a personalised briefing. Then it's onto the Great Taste Trail — a scenic coastal ride past galleries, studios, and artisan food stops along the way. Stretch out on the expansive sands of Rabbit Island before a relaxing boat cruise to the pretty Mapua Wharf. Explore the village at your own pace — boutique shops, cafes, and artisanal treats are best enjoyed slowly.

From the coast, the trail winds through rural landscapes and climbs to Tasman Heights for sweeping panoramic views across the region. Descend into Motueka — the heart of fruit and hop country — with plenty of great spots to stop for a meal or a locally brewed beer.

Optional: Spend a night in Motueka to soak it all in, or push on to Kaiteriteri and its golden sands and rich Māori and colonial history.

DAY 3 — Kaiteriteri & Beyond Beach day · Boat cruise option · Relaxed

Spend the morning on one of New Zealand's most beloved golden-sand beaches, or jump aboard a boat cruise into Abel Tasman National Park — turquoise water, native bush, and secluded coves await. Your return transfer to Nelson brings a great adventure to a close.

Your luggage is transferred to your first night's accommodation while you set off on one of the trail's most memorable experiences — riding through the historic 1.4 km Spooners Tunnel. Emerging into the light, the trail winds through native forest, along rivers, and across the wide open landscapes of the Nelson plains, passing through the charming town of Wakefield before rolling into Nelson.

DAY 2 — Nelson → Māpua

DAY 3 — Kaiteriteri → Woodstock
Historic rail trail · Forest & river riding · ~45 km · Moderate

Leaving the coast behind, the trail heads inland through the fruit-growing country around Motueka before climbing into native forest and following historic rail corridors through the Waimea valley. A quieter, more remote day with some of the tour's most rewarding scenery — rivers, farmland, and forest all feature before you arrive in Woodstock.

DAY 4 — Woodstock → Wakefield via Spooners Tunnel
Historic tunnel · Rail trail · ~35 km · Easy–Moderate

The highlight of the inland leg — riding through the famous 1.4 km Spooners Tunnel, one of New Zealand's great trail experiences. Emerging into open farmland, the trail winds through the peaceful rural landscapes of the Waimea plains and into the charming town of Wakefield, a great spot to rest up and reflect on the journey so far.

DAY 5 — Wakefield → Nelson
Easy valley riding · Trail finale · ~35 km · Easy

A relaxed final day following the trail back toward Nelson through orchards, rivers, and open farmland. A fitting end to a loop that has taken in the very best of the Nelson Tasman region — coast, country, forest, and everything in between.
