Kaitiakitanga: our Commitment to Safety, Culture & Sustainability
Inspired by the Maori philosophy of Kaitiakitanga, Cycle Nelson’s sustainability ethos is woven into everything the company does. Championing immersive explorations of the wider Nelson Tasman and 'Top of the South Island' region. Prioritising positive impacts on the environment and community.
The company stands out for being climate positive, offsetting 130 percent of operational carbon emissions—ensuring that every ride contributes to ecological restoration by funding only indigenous forest restoration projects. Their commitment to sustainability goes beyond environmental stewardship, extending directly to community engagement: Cycle Nelson supports local projects that provide food and resources to people facing hardship, and actively works to empower those who are injured or impaired, enabling them to experience the mental and physical benefits of cycling.
Staff are regularly hands-on with trail maintenance, tree planting, pest trapping, and habitat restoration—actions that help keep the region’s landscapes healthy and accessible for all. With a deep respect for the rich Māori history of Te Tauihu, Cycle Nelson seeks to continually enrich its understanding and connection to local heritage, considering their fleet of bikes as “land waka”—modern vessels that honour the region’s legacy by enabling guests to journey deeper into its stories and natural wonders.
This commitment ensures every adventure with Cycle Nelson is not just sustainable, climate positive, and restorative for the land, but also culturally respectful and inclusive, helping riders engage more fully with both the vibrant communities and treasured environments of the region.
Cycle Nelson is a fully audited Adventure Activity Operator, accredited under WorkSafe New Zealand’s Adventure Activities Certification Scheme, giving guests confidence that our mountain bike and walking tours meet nationally recognised safety standards. Holding Department of Conservation concessions across key public conservation areas in the Top of the South allows us to legally and responsibly guide riders and walkers through some of the region’s most spectacular landscapes, while supporting conservation outcomes on the land we operate on.
As part of these approvals, Cycle Nelson is committed to kaitiakitanga – the Māori concept of guardianship – which shapes how we plan and deliver every trip. This means minimising our environmental footprint through careful group sizes, low-impact trail use, waste reduction, and ongoing vehicle and equipment efficiency improvements, while actively encouraging manuhiri (visitors) to respect local wildlife, cultural values, and shared spaces. We also work within DOC and local council guidelines to support track maintenance, share safety and conservation messages, and contribute to a sustainable tourism model that helps protect the Top of the South for future generations of riders, walkers and local communities
